This resort has cabins next to a river, a massage yurt, the opportunity to have High Tea next to the river, in a large white gazzebo, or in their dining room. They have hot tubs and jacuzzis in some of the cabins.

Riversong was amazing and we hope to come back next summer! ☺The saff and breakfast were fantastic! ☹The hot tubs in the surrounding woods could use some amenities around them to make access more inviting. It would have been great to have a central fire pit that was built for all guests on cool evenings to socialize by.

A nice property, although no one who stays there is freindly. ☺The room was decent, parking was easy, decent breakfast, secluded from all the highway traffic. Daniel was great in getting us settled in ☹The AC unit was noisy, and unclear how to regulate, although we did open the windows at night and turned the AC off

This was a lovely Tea Service, set in our own private gazebo looking out over the mountain side. The food was delicious as was the tea. After we walked down to the stream and it was absolutely beautiful! Next time we plan on staying in a cabin for a few days. Absolutely, dont overlook this gem while visiting Estes.

Historic Estes Park Inns: A Tradition of Mountain Hospitality

How historic mountain lodges helped shape Estes Park—and why that tradition is still alive at Riversong Inn Retreat.

Historic Estes Park Inns

Long before Estes Park became one of Colorado’s most beloved mountain destinations, visitors were already making the journey here in search of something they couldn’t find at home.

Fresh mountain air.

Towering peaks.

Peace and quiet.

A place to reconnect with nature.

And to welcome those early travelers, a unique tradition began to emerge: the Estes Park inn.

Today, historic inns remain an important part of the town’s character, offering an experience that is deeply connected to the history, hospitality, and natural beauty that first drew people here more than a century ago.

Before Hotels, There Were Mountain Lodges

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Estes Park wasn’t known for large resorts or chain hotels. Instead, visitors stayed in family-owned lodges, cabins, ranches, and mountain inns that blended naturally into the landscape.

These early Estes Park inns were built as places to gather, rest, and enjoy the outdoors. Guests spent their days hiking, fishing, horseback riding, and simply appreciating the slower pace of mountain life.

Hospitality wasn’t about luxury in the modern sense.

It was about warm meals, welcoming hosts, and creating a place where visitors felt at home.

A Town Built Around Hospitality

As more travelers discovered Estes Park, inns became part of the town’s identity.

Families returned summer after summer.

Children grew up visiting the same properties.

Friendships formed around breakfast tables and evening conversations.

Many of today’s historic inns have welcomed generations of guests, preserving traditions while thoughtfully adapting to modern comforts.

It’s one of the reasons Estes Park feels different from many vacation destinations.

Its history isn’t tucked away in museums.

It’s still being lived.

Riversong's Story Begins in 1922

Among these historic properties is Riversong Inn Retreat, originally built in 1922 as Marshall Lodge.

Unlike many commercial lodges of its time, Marshall Lodge began as a private summer retreat for the Marshall family from Lincoln, Kansas. They escaped the Midwest heat each summer, gathering beside the Big Thompson River to create traditions that would span generations.

Children played hide-and-seek among the granite boulders.

Rainy afternoons were spent working puzzles by the fire.

Mornings smelled of pancakes, fresh coffee, and wood smoke drifting through the lodge.

Those simple moments became the foundation of a place that has welcomed guests for more than 100 years.

Preserving History While Caring for the Future

Like many historic Estes Park inns, Riversong has evolved through the decades while remaining true to its roots.

Each generation of owners has served as caretakers rather than simply owners—preserving the property’s charm while thoughtfully improving the guest experience.

Over the years, trails have been maintained, gardens lovingly cared for, rooms refreshed, and amenities added to complement the natural setting without overshadowing it.

The goal has never been to change what makes Riversong special.

It has always been to help future generations experience it.

Historic Estes Park Inns

What Makes a Historic Inn Different?

Staying at a historic inn is different from checking into a typical hotel.

You’re stepping into a place with stories.

A place where thousands of celebrations have unfolded:

  • engagements

  • anniversaries

  • honeymoons

  • family reunions

  • quiet personal retreats

  • weddings

  • spontaneous weekend escapes

The walls have witnessed laughter, conversations, milestones, and memories stretching back decades.

Each guest becomes part of that continuing story.

The Tradition Continues

Today’s travelers enjoy comforts that weren’t imaginable in 1922—private baths, luxurious suites, hot tubs, outdoor saunas, and thoughtfully prepared breakfasts.

Yet the heart of the experience remains remarkably similar.

Guests still wake to birdsong.

Still wander along the river.

Still gather over breakfast before heading into Rocky Mountain National Park.

Still return at day’s end to a quiet place where the pace naturally slows.

Some traditions don’t need to change.

Why Historic Inns Continue to Matter

In a world of standardized hotels and fast-paced travel, historic inns offer something increasingly rare.

They provide a sense of place.

Every room has its own personality.

Every property tells a different story.

Every stay feels a little more personal.

Historic inns remind us that travel isn’t only about where we go—it’s about how a place makes us feel while we’re there.

More Than a Place to Stay

The history of Estes Park inns is ultimately the history of hospitality.

It’s about opening doors, welcoming strangers, and creating spaces where people can rest, reconnect, and make memories that last long after the trip ends.

For more than a century, Riversong has been part of that tradition.

And while every guest writes a different chapter, the story remains beautifully the same:

A quiet mountain retreat.

A warm welcome.

And the timeless invitation to slow down and enjoy the Rockies
